With the latest business news showing a record stock market, tight labor supply, and wages beginning to rise, there is a strong temptation to consider looking for a new job, a new employer. You learn of friends taking new jobs. Thoughts come into your mind raising doubts about where you work. Am I underpaid currently ? Do I like my present job ? Before you know it, you’ve convinced yourself that a job change makes sense.

But before you do, take time to objectively look at what you like about your current job and your employer. Write them down. Then write down your dislikes, what would make your job more challenging. At some point, ask your boss if you could meet with h/her. Discuss them in a calm way. Ask h/her how you could improve/expand your job. Then discuss the aspects of your job that you don’t like.

H/her response will tell you a lot. It might not result in any clear conclusion. But going through this process helps you think through the thought of a job change. Chances are, you might find that where you are now is where you ought to be.
